Brace yourself josiah, I'm talking about music and probably know nothing of what i'm talking about in your opinion. I have to do that public service announcement as to not offend the gatekeeper of blogdom... Josiah
This AP article was pretty funny in regards to Ryan Adams.
The guy is a nut, but his latest CD is pretty spot on and a great bounce back from the awful awful awful 29. Easy Tiger is a good combo of what he's done well in the recent past with the Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights... and thankfully skips over the very skipp-able 29, seriously that was the worst cd i've ever bought. I bought it on a tuesday at bestbuy in chatty the day it came out and sold it to mckays on that wednesday after 3 unbareble listens.
Tiger's songs are rather short but my three favorite are Two, Halloweenhead, and I taught myself to grow old. Halloweenhead is kind of lame from a lyric perspective but its got a good tone and pace that i like.
Pearls on a String is a real good take at a strong blues grass kind of song, something i think he should try to dive a little deeper into. I mean his music's always had that influence but it would be cool if he just came out with this heavy blue grass cd. Jacksonville City nights was probably his heaviest in blues grass, but it had a few songs that were too country for my tastes.
Then I taught myself to grow old is one of the best depressing songs i've heard since Johnny Cash's Hurt... granted Hurt is infintely better due to the wisdom and experience and Cashness Cash has. But this song is like a 32 year old's version.
In regards to the article about Ryan it will be interesting if he stays with Lost Highway Records, or if they stay with him. The part about him inserting non-sensical lyrics in the middle of songs to "test" the record company is just hilarious.
And crabby take note of this direct quote "He has been sober for more than a year after kicking a prodigious drug and alcohol problem,".... I believe that is the second argument I've won in our recent battles. Don't mess with the bull... you'll get the hooves.
So the wife's going out of town... let the party commence. Just kidding, don't want to get in trouble for spilling Pina Coladas on the sofa. But one thing I am doing, is going to three of the four cards braves games this week.
Thursday night me and a buddy from work are going just for the heck of it. Friday is some work function that may or may not be in a sky box fancy thing... not sure, just know its free and probably include free food and hopefully free beer. Then Saturday me and some buddies from chatty are going, should be awesome, though i may be so tired after two days in a row... have to drink some coffee or something.
Plus i"m playing golf saturday with some co-workers, man i'm going to beat by Sunday.
Kind of disappointed, might not have time for some video games... plus on top of all that i have tons of work to do. oh well.
Go cards you mishmash of a team that lacks cohesion, purpose, and healthy players. Frankly i might secretly chear on the braves, i want them to win a world series, they're due. Plus as long as the mets, red sox, yanks, and cubs don't win i'm happy. Oh and houston, cant' stand houston.
I actually haven't watched many games this year, mostly settled for the Braves who are a bit more together this year than the birds. But here is my assesment of the obvious.
Biggest Disappointments: Kip Wells and Adam Kennedy. I really though these guys were going to be amazing additions. Kennedy a cardinals minor leaguer and Kip who's shown signs of greatness in his career. Kennedy's an odd one because he was awesome with the Angels for a short time and I think the birds really regretted sending him to the west coast, especially when he won the WS in 2002. But he has had no pop to his bat... or even a snap or a crackle. The decision to get some stability in 2nd just hasn't panned out all that well.
Wells.... ugh... I thought if Duncan do what he did with Weaver, surely he could do even more with Wells. I mean he had two double digit winning seasons with Pittsburgh... and that's saying a lot.
Reyes... Well I think the cards need to part ways with him, that or they need to part ways with the Duncan Larussa era. Here is a prospect that has good stuff but is a square peg that duncan and larussa keep trying to put in their round hole. It says something that when he's in the minors and pitches the way he wants he's lights out, but as soon as he's called up and told to pitch a different way... he stinks... hmmmm think about that one. Granted I'd take duncan and larussa over Reyes, so I'd trade him and hope to get a good prospect in return, one that fits into the groundball style of play they have. Makes you wonder if even if the Cardinals kept Dan Haren if he would've have succeeded under Duncan. Haren's a bit of a power pitcher at times.
The other duncan has been not too shabby. The injuries have hurt and really exposed a lack of a bench. And when the bench is injured you're left with an exposed and bare minor league system. Whereas the bravos pull up guys like Saltalamachia and others that fill in perfectly and excel, the cardinals can't pull up much because they're still rebuilding down in the minors.
It'll be interesting to see if and when Ankiel is brought up and if he can contribute. I've read a lot of scouting reports on him and its all positive, some have said he's a top prospect.
I think the cardinals were hoping to land Burleh (sp) this offseason gettin the home town discount, but after the White Sox resigned him that's pretty much out. I think the cardinals often rely too much on the "home town discount..." So far they've used that as a ploy to try to land a few guys and everytime they don't its b/c they wouldn't pony up to the table and fork up the cash.
I wouldn't mind if the birds did a bit of a sell off. Mainly rolen, i think if they can get any young prospects for hiim that they should go after them. He's good, but he's getting old adn lets face it him and tony will never be best friends after last year. I mean he's probably the 3 best 3rd basemen in the NL right now, maybe 4th. But still a few contenders could use him and pay dearly for him, specifically some teams out on the west coast. It'd be great to send him to the Angels or A's both of which have so much young talent that it causes me to salivate.
Other than that the cardinals don't have much to trade, Izzy and Carp are the only two pitchers with 'hefty' salaries, but they're no that bad based on the market so it makes more sense to keep them.
I'd say ditch Juan encarnacion but who would want him... why the cardinals ever signed him is beyond me. Jimmy E makes a good chunk of salary but he was pretty much resigned as a favor to him and to the fans to have him retire as a cardinal. At least he better after this tenure.
So some unluckiness this season but all in all they over achieved last year and from all the fans I've talked to, we're still just basking in the glory of last year.
So enjoying last year and watching the braves.... that's been my baseball for 07...But will go to at least 2 of the 4 braves cardinals games at the Ted in a two weeks. I got my saturday game scheduled with some buddies from chatty and then thursday with some co-workers. Friday may not happen and sunday i'll have anna-kate all day so i'll have to for go that one.
I learned a valuable lesson last week in church softball.
"If you're wearing shorts.... don't slide..."
It was the second inning, I was on first, guy up to bat hits into a double play, as I'm running to second I debate in my head, 'if I slide I’m safe if I don't I’m out'"
So knowing the game is close (6 to 5) I slide and take it for the team... I'm safe thanks to a good kick/nudge of the foot to knock the guys foot off the bag. So then the bench erupts as both I and the guy who hit the ball are safe. I stand up to see my leg covered in dirt and blood. Nasty
As the night goes on we proceed to win by 20 points and my sacrifice for the team gets sort of lost in the pages of history. Though I still have a nice bloody puss scab to remind me.
It’s been nearly a week and it still hasn't healed completely, that is to say if I shower or get it wet it sort of reactivates it and wearing pants becomes a predicament. Thus I've tried to wear shorts when at all possible but working where I do, I don't really have that option.
Then there's Sunday for church....
"Janelle I'm going to wear shorts to church this thing is just nasty and I don't want to get my pants all... you know..."
I get the look of, "Really? That is so tacky..." I get that look a lot btw.
So I coalesce for the sake of my marriage and peace in the Middle East and wear pants.
As we're sitting in church my wife accidentally kicks my wound while crossing her leg causing me to wince and groan in church... as well as leave a nice blood stain on my pant leg.
Anyway, so all that being said, don't slide into second wearing shorts.
